Only vacuuming isn’t considered as real cleaning… Seriously!

We like to think that we can keep our carpet clean on our own. All that we need to do is vacuum every month or so and blot when there’s a stain, right?

Wrong!!! What you are likely forgetting (or, if you’re anything like us, what you never knew) is that almost all carpet companies require you to professionally steam clean your carpet every 12 to 24 months, to keep your warranty valid.

So, what we’re trying to say is that just vacuuming is not enough. Neither is steaming carpets yourself. Professional cleaning is, like it or not, practically, the only way to protect your carpet in most cases. And it’s also the only way to ensure that the carpet is clean enough to protect your health, as well.

Indoor air quality can be eight to ten times worse than outdoor air quality, if you don’t clean your flooring, clean your drapes and let air inside regularly. So, you can only imagine how important air quality is when millions of Americans suffer from indoor allergies.

Therefore, in order to keep the air quality in your home clean; it’s very important to follow a few carpet-cleaning rules. Namely:

Call professionals to clean your carpet (more often than you think you should)

If you still are having a hard time understanding why you need to have professionals clean your carpet, consider this; many carpet companies won’t honor your warranty unless you hire professional cleaners every 12 to 18 months. In some cases, the requirement may be 24 months as well, check your carpet’s warranty for specifics.

Meanwhile, most of the professionals recommend even more frequent steaming in the interest of a dust-free home; in fact, they suggest calling in professionals steamers every six months, and every four to six WEEKS, if you have a pet (Keep this in mind though this applies to carpet and not area rugs).

Between steams, vacuum at least weekly (or much more often with pets)

There’s no denying that vacuuming remains the easiest way to keep the carpets clean and area rugs clean between steams. Our professionals recommend vacuuming once per week, to keep those abrasive dust particles out of the carpet fibers. However, you should ramp up the frequency in high-traffic areas or if you own a pet, these spots might need daily vacuuming depending on how much debris you notice.

And take areas rug out for spring and fall cleaning sessions

Area rugs vary in their care instructions, so check yours for its ideal cleaning schedule. Generally, you should vacuum rugs with the same frequency as carpets than deep-cleaning every six months with good old-fashioned broom-beating. Take the rugs out, shake them out, beat them with an actual broom (ideally while wearing mask to protect your face), and let them air dry outside for at least a day.

Blot carpet spills immediately, DO NOT WAIT

Rubbing the stain will spread the goo around, and can distort the carpet’s pile, or fluffy shape. And waiting to clean a stain let’s moisture seep deeper, so professionals suggest cleaning spills the instant that they happen. Spray the carpet cleaner on a cloth and dab the stain, working from the outside to its center.

…and if you keep it clean, you can keep it forever! (Well, almost.)

Professionals say that you can keep your carpet for a lifetime, if you keep it clean. Having said that, carpet life spans, however, ranges with quality, some carpets are made to last up to 15 years, if kept dust free and clean.

It’s just a little motivation to keep the steam machine going, isn’t it?

These are some wonderful tips on carpet cleaning. I have always believed that carpet is something you need to take a deep care of. You can’t just pull out a vacuum and start rubbing it like crazy. This post explains it very well. And if you can’t do it, yes calling a professional is the best way to go.
